Like many of you, Noonie & I have been trying to think of ideas to share the love (in a small but helpful way) for those affected by this Virus! We have decided to be inspired by one of our fave movies: Pay It Forward!

So for the first in this instalment we are going to Pay It Forward for those on the front line of this virus: health care professionals! So if you know a Nurse, Doctor or Ambulance/ Paramedic worker who could do with some cheering up, please nominate them via this email with the below.

1. Their full name & contact email address or phone number

2. Their profession? Are they a nurse, doctor or paramedic?

3. Your name & email

4. A lil message from you to them

We will pick THREE health care professionals at random and contact them to let them know that you have nominated them to win this SuperCool gift with your message.

They will have a special HEALTH gift pack sent to them: $50 gift pack from us, TheSuperCool and $50 gift pack from Moses & Co (the awesome health food store in the South Melbourne Market)

Just in case you were wondering, we will NOT add your email or their email to our mailing list (this is legit - we're not trying to scam anyone!)

So let's share the love and reward these special people helping our community!

If you like this idea & are a business who wants to partner up with us, we'll be doing a new version of this every week for the moment! Contact us here...

If you're following this on instagram: the hashtag is #payitforwardsupercoolstyle

KEEPING YOURSELF SANE

By Kate Vandermeer

There's a lot that's out of our CONTROL right now... but we can control some things... like how we respond to this... we've got a list of things you can do during social distancing to help you remain positive and SANE!

1. Have a BATH: Set up some candles, put some bath salts with epsom salts in (great for detoxing and cleaning up immunity) and add some pure essential oils like Lavender. Read a book, or just chill! NO SCREENS! Just relax and enjoy this bath.

2. Learn a Language: Pick a language, learn a word everyday - put notes around the house with each of the words so you keep building on it!

3. Read Books: Download some books on your kindle, borrow books from neighbours or free libraries (cause most libraries are shut now) and relax in your fave chair, bed or couch. Really take your time to slow down the brain that is used of cramming info in short time frames. Reading is pure mindfulness. Check out our collection of books here.

4. Grow some Plants: It's a great time to really grow & nurture your plants. Look at books & online guides as to which plants are best for inside and for your bedroom to improve your sleep quality. We've got some great planters, books on plants etc here..

5. Stop following negative people on social media: If anyone you follow makes you feel less than, competitive, why me etc... UNFOLLOW. Clean up your social media accounts and find positive, normal, interesting, diverse people to follow.

6. Limit your NEWS intake: go to trusted, non sensationalised news sources and check it once a day at the most. Don't let it DEFINE your thoughts and day. What you put into your world + thoughts is going to influence you. Like positive, uplifting tv, books & people make you feel good. Negative scary movies, people & books make you feel scared, angry and have nightmares. EDIT people!

7. COOKING: Clean out your cupboards, research recipes that are resourceful, wholesome and easy to make. Compile lists of what you can eat for snacks, lunches & dinners and have this list easy to find. Feeding yourself well and nutritionally is a good ritual for NOW and for LIFE!

8. EXERCISE: Get up and go for a walk, run, cycle, scoot etc or some fresh air as soon as you can in the morning. Being quarantined means you need to get out of the house each day, get some fresh air & define the day so you're not home ALL DAY LONG! Walk your pets, kids + selves!!

9. MAKE HOME COSY: Make sure you make your home look and feel as good as possible. You're going to be spending alot of time at home, so rearrange furniture to make it operate as best as possible and feel really good.

10. CLEANSE: Now is a great time to clean out wardrobes, work out what needs fixing, cleaning, donating. Go through old paperwork & shred/ recycle. Empty cupboards, wallets, handbags, backpacks - cleaning up makes you feel productive as well!

11. MEDITATE: If there is one thing you can do to help yourself right now, its MEDITATE. Scared to try? What if my mind overtakes? It definitely will... as someone who put this off for 37 years, I am testament that it works. I just keeping plugging away. I noticed a difference within weeks by sticking at it for a mere 10 mins a day. Now I REALLY notice if I don't meditate. I'm much calmer, more patient as a parent, go with the flow more, less anxious, my body feels better, my breathing is better, my overall decision making is more intuitive and less rushed. It's the best SLOWING down technique you can do and so so so good for you. I started with a free app called CALM... did the intro 7 days of calm and boom... then the 30 day program and then everyday!

Spotlight: Canvas & Sasson

By Kate Vandermeer

BRAND NAME: Canvas+Sasson

DESIGNER: Sarah Quin

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS:  9 years

DESCRIBE CANVAS & SASSON IN 3 WORDS: Eclectic, Colourful and Inspired.

CANVAS & SASSON IS ALL ABOUT EMBRACING TEXTURE, PRINT AND COLOUR! HOW DO YOU FIND STAYING TRUE TO THIS ETHOS GOES WHEN TRENDS COME AND GO IN HOMEWARES E.G. MINIMALISM VS BOHO ETC?
Canvas+Sasson has a clear vision, in that we love travelling and exploring different cultures, to bring our customers an inspired mix of classic and bohemian homewares. We do look at trends in the fashion and interiors space, but we tend not to base collections around these trends - just take snippets of colour or techniques and play with those elements. We are definitely a very eclectic brand that offer classic and timeless styles to more bohemian looks. Essentially we just create pieces we love!

HOW DO YOU APPROACH EACH SEASON? DO YOU PICK A TRAVEL DESTINATION AND THINK ABOUT LOCAL CULTURAL DESIGN OR DO YOU LOOK AT BEST SELLERS AND HOW YOU COULD APPLY TEXTURES FROM THAT SEASON TO THE NEXT SEASON?
We approach each season with a plan, as well as working more organically. We always need to have a partial plan in place, so we know what areas we need to order for, what colour palettes we’re working towards and what techniques we’d like to utilise, but we try not to be too fixed in these ideas. We develop mood boards to also keep us focused as it is easy to go off on a crazy tangents!

C+S travel to India twice a year, as well as Europe, South America and other parts of Asia, and they always inspire us in unexpected ways. It’s so great being on the road and creating our designs based on things that give us hits of inspiration!

YOU RECENTLY JOINED FORCES WITH SASSON? SO NOW YOU OFFER THE FULL
EXPERIENCE. TEXTILES, SOFT FURNISHINGS AND FURNITURE. WHAT DROVE THIS
DECISION?
One of our driving forces behind the merge, was to create a full lifestyle brand that can offer everything for many interior styles. We can now bring our customers styles that go from start to finish in home decor - the bedlinen, the bedhead, bedside table and lamp that sits on it… And this also allows us to aim bigger and better with each season!

HOW DO YOU FIND THE MOVEMENT TOWARDS FAIR TRADE AND KNOWING WHERE PRODUCT IS MADE? IS THERE MUCH CLARITY OVER WHERE YOU CAN SOURCE YOUR DESIGNS WHEN YOU ARE ON THE GROUND IN INDIA ETC?
C+S have very strong relationships with our suppliers and we will not bring on a new supplier until we have visited their factories and are happy with their work practices, treatment of employees and philosophy in regards to environmental practices. We have a fantastic group of suppliers that we’ve been collaborating with for many years and they have become lovely friends who we enjoy seeing on our trips, hearing about which daughter is getting married next, who just had a baby and their life in India - so different to ours!

YOUR LATEST IMAGERY FOR YOUR CAMPAIGNS IS NEXT LEVEL! TELL US ABOUT YOUR COLLABORATION WITH YOUR STYLIST?
We really wanted to create an aspirational campaign this time around and we’re absolutely thrilled with the results! We had quite a few shoots in Sydney and Melbourne (lots of work, but great fun) and we teamed up with Stylist extraordinaire Heidi Albertiri of The Life Style Edit. She’s incredibly hard working and has a beautiful positive energy and we really loved working with her. We have just launched our Catalogue for 2017 / 2018 which you can view online, or request a hard copy and all our new campaign images can be seen in the gallery - some really amazing shots are there - even if we say so ourselves!

HOW HAVE YOU FOUND THE AUSTRALIAN RETAIL MARKET IN THE LAST 2 YEARS? WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING SHIFT FROM A BUSINESS POINT OF VIEW?
As we have a lot of retail customers, it is really interesting to hear all the mixed views on how they are going. I think the classic ‘bricks and mortar’ stores are having to re invent themselves and keep adapting as the online market has really changed the way customers shop. We still believe there is demand for both but it is pushing everyone to provide an exceptional experience as customers have greater choice in the market place.

HOW HAVE YOU FOUND INSTAGRAM IN TERMS OF PROMOTING YOUR BRAND?
Instagram is amazing! It’s definitely one of the best platforms for getting the brand out there, especially as we are such a ‘visual’ industry - it’s got a great reach, it’s a lovely, supportive community and it’s also a great way to keep in touch with what’s happening in the industry, in a really quick and accessible way!

WE LOVE THE NEW " CARAVANE" COLLECTION. THE COLOURS, THE TEXTURE, THE CRAZINESS! DESCRIBE HOW THIS COLLECTION CAME TO BE?
Oh we love this collection too! We had an idea to do this woven look in a more unexpected colour palette (not natural!) and our first thought was a sunset palette - blush, coral, apricot - but then it grew from there and we added in the sky blue and hints of charcoal. And following our C+S ethos of more is more, we then decided to get as textural as possible!!

Spotlight on He & Her the Label

By Kate Vandermeer
on November 01, 2017
With 0 comments

BRAND NAME: He and Her the label
DESIGNER: Rachel Ussher
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS: 4 years
DESCRIBE HE & HER IN 3 WORDS: Quality | Individual | Fun

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE BEGINNING HE & HER?
I used to work as a woman wear designer. When I got pregnant with our first child (Florin) I started looking around for clothes that I loved.. but could't find much. So naturally, I decided to design my own, and from there He and Her was birthed.
YOU BEGAN HE & HER TO OFFER MORE GENDER NEUTRAL BASICS. HOW HAVE YOU FOUND THE RESPONSE TO THIS AND AFTER A FEW SEASONS, HAVE YOU FOUND THIS HAS EVOLVED OR CHANGED?

5 years ago when I had Florin there wasn't much of an offering of plain basics that weren't bright pink or had giraffes and elephants on them.. haha! So we started with prints we designed and paired it back with basics that weren't too bright and bold. We didn't realise how many people were actually looking for the same thing until we launched.. Since then our basics and our prints have become a real staple for our customers. We've worked hard on perfecting our fits so that both our prints and basics are super comfy, fit perfectly and last and last wash after wash.
Although we started out as predominately unisex, the very first season we launched we offered a floral and it went crazy! People were all about it, I guess there wasn't many other brands offering jersey florals. So each season now we bring out a new floral which has actually steered the brand away from such a unisex vibe. Also as Florin has grown up (she's now nearly 5) she has also become more and more opinionated in what she wants to wear (and all the mama's out there all agreed in unison) so our styles have become more gender focused..... dresses and skirts for the girls, and resort style shirts & shorts for the boys. We definitely still do a bunch of the unisex styles, but our colour palette and styling is a little more gender focused these days.

YOU HAVE A SMALL FAMILY. HOW HAVE YOU FOUND MANAGING YOUR TIME SINCE BECOMING A MUM AND GROWING THE BRAND?
Hm, well I am definitely no expert at it, haha! Its been 5 years of trial and error (we actually launched the brand when I was 6 months pregnant) so the whole juggle of work and life and downtime has been something that as a family we've had to be really intentional about getting right. In the early days it looked a lot like working at night and trading in time for myself to get work done, while looking after small children during the day.....
Now that the girls (Florin 4, Luna 2) go to daycare a few days a week my work weeks are much more structured, which is working great! I genuinely love what I do, so despite the juggle I'm all in.....

YOU HAVE QUITE A FEW NEW ZEALAND STOCKISTS - HOW DO YOU FIND THE NZ MARKET COMPARED TO AUSTRALIA?
We're relatively new to the NZ market. We have great agent who represent us in NZ, and our NZ customers seem to love the brand. It feels like our NZ customers have quite a similar style to what we do in Melbs so the brand fits in really well over there.

THE KIDS CLOTHING MARKET HAS GROWN SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE LAST 2 YEARS IN PARTICULAR; IN YOUR OPINION WHAT HAS CONTRIBUTED TO THAT?
Yeah its boomed. 4 years ago when we started this, there wasn't half as much in the market as there is now. The kids market is always going to be in high demand, as people are always going to keep having kids. And I suppose as life keeps expanding, we're able to access more and more, its only natural that would have a knock on effect into the kids market. Technology has also played a huge part in expanding the market. Websites are easier to build, Instagram for promoting it, Hootsuite for social, Xero for accounting... There's basically a program for everything you need to start up a business now!

WHAT 3 TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE SMALL BRANDS IN AUSTRALIA ABOUT BEGINNING A START UP IN THE KIDS MARKET?
1. Find your gap and fill it. Make your offering different to what's out there and people will come looking for it.
2. Be uniquely you... There's nothing more powerful that sticking to your own style / vibe.. Its what comes the most naturally and you'll flourish in it. People want to see the 'lifestyle' behind your brand and if its artificial people can see straight through that!
3. Identify your weaknesses and outsource them. I'd much rather have people doing the things I can't do, then me spending time, effort (& frustration) on trying to figure them out.

HOW HAVE YOU FOUND INSTAGRAM IN TERMS OF PROMOTING YOUR BRAND?
Instagram is a great tool for businesses. It has a really amazing way of creating community amongst its followers and allows customers a direct contact point with brands.

WHAT OTHER CATEGORIES DO YOU HOPE TO EXPAND INTO?
Good question.... We get a lot of emails from our customers asking for grown up size tee's and clothing in our prints and plains. So thats an possibility in the future.. Watch this spot!

Spotlight: Halcyon Nights

By Kate Vandermeer
on October 11, 2017

BRAND NAME:  Halcyon Nights
DESIGNER: Kym Purtell
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS:  2 years! This September!
DESCRIBE HALCYON NIGHTS IN 3 WORDS: Playful, Colourful, Emotive

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
YOUR BACKGROUND AS ONE OF THE ORIGINAL FOUNDERS OF THE
FAT STORES IS IMPRESSIVE. DID THAT GIVE YOU INSIGHT INTO THE
AUSTRALIAN MARKET FOR HALCYON NIGHTS? OR IS IT A
COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BEAST BEING IN THE KIDS INDUSTRY?

Being a retailer / buyer /product developer has given me a huge insight
into how to bring together the collections. Being aware of product
packaging & merchandising from a stores perspective, as to how it will
sit in store has been a great asset. My life partner Reuben works in
events / marketing and IT so together we can be quite the team.
Also being a mum helps! Knowing what products mums need for their
babies and what is useful and what is not. Tying this together with my
background has been wonderful. I have had a lot of fun with it.

YOU'VE COLLABORATE WITH LOCAL ARTISTS DEAR PLASTIC, MIN
PIN & SHUH LEE. WAS THIS ALWAYS PART OF YOUR BRAND
IDENTITY?

Yes definitely. There are so many incredible artists who I find
inspirational. Working with artists adds another element and creates
variety in the design. I am not an artist myself so it makes sense to
outsource this part of the process. I have sourced artists based on what
I love and what I am drawn to. The Dear Plastic Rainbow Mountain piece
I saw years and years ago at Craft Victoria exhibition. I fell in love and
when I started on the collection I got in touch with them.

YOU INITIALLY BEGAN WITH BABY / KIDS BEDDING BUT HAVE SINCE
EXPANDED INTO BABY CLOTHING, SWADDLES & HATS. WHAT DROVE
THIS DECISION TO EXPAND SO EARLY ON INTO YOUR BUSINESS?

I think my love for making and creating things. Not having set
boundaries and exploring what works. Also being a mum, my youngest
is 3 now so when I started developing the wraps & clothing I was in that
space and using those types of products. So I was really driven by what I
thought mums would like and need.

YOU HAVE A SMALL FAMILY. HOW HAVE YOU FOUND MANAGING
YOUR TIME SINCE BECOMING A MUM AND GROWING THE BRAND?

It’s pretty crazy all the time!  I’m a passionate person & I really love
what I do so that certainly helps. You have to be organised and be able
to achieve a lot in small time frames. Being able to switch ‘hats’ quickly
and effectively. It’s definitely challenging at times but absolutely has its
benefits. I can still pick up the kid from school and work around them.

THE OUTBACK DREAMERS & FERN GULLY RANGES HAVE BEEN
HUGE FOR US WITH THE "AUSTRALIANA" PRINTS. DID YOU EXPECT
THIS PRINT WOULD EXPLODE OR WAS IT A HAPPY COINCIDENCE?

I would say a little bit of both but really, I did think it would be or should
be super successful. Having travelled a lot overseas and within
Australia, who hasn’t tried to buy a souvenir and found them incredibly
ugly. It seemed like a big opportunity in the market. Working with Min
Pin and her incredible style lent itself to that so well. I asked her to do
the first Australian print and when I saw it I was amazed. I thought this
has to be a hit!  So drawing from my own experiences helps shape the
collections.

THE KIDS CLOTHING MARKET HAS GROWN SIGNIFICANTLY IN THE
LAST 2 YEARS IN PARTICULAR; IN YOUR OPINION WHAT HAS
CONTRIBUTED TO THAT?

Demand I guess. And the fact that people don’t mind spending their
money on their kids. Babies and children’s tend to grow out of things
quickly hence the need to replace items. But it is an interesting
question. It seems people’s values have turned from spending on
themselves and their homes to their children. I also think children’s
product is generally happy, fun and light hearted. It is nice to buy. Retail
therapy through kids product!

WHAT 3 TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE SMALL BRANDS IN AUSTRALIA
ABOUT BEGINNING A START UP IN THE KIDS MARKET?

1. I think it’s the same for any business you need a clear plan, a vision
and idea of what you are going to create.
2.  It's hard work, be prepared for the ups and the downs. You have to
keep at it.

3. Do your research. Understand what you are creating and how you fit
into the market.

HOW HAVE YOU FOUND INSTAGRAM IN TERMS OF PROMOTING YOUR
BRAND?

Amazing! We are so fortunate to be growing a business in this
time of enormous surge social media. Incredible.

WHAT OTHER CATEGORIES DO YOU HOPE TO EXPAND INTO?

Will keep you posted BUT some great new Items being added next
season for gorgeous babes.

Spotlight: Addition Studios

By Kate Vandermeer

BRAND NAME: Addition Studios

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS:  (between Page Thirty Three & Addition Studios) 7 Years

DESCRIBE ADDITION STUDIOS IN 3 WORDS: The Modern Utopia

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL INTENT BEHIND CREATING ADDITION STUDIOS?

We wanted to bring together all our loves under one cohesive roof. Our name change from Page Thirty Three to Addition Studio now encompasses all of these in its meaning. We create Designer Wellness themed products, which our plus sign logo, that also resembles a first aid sign, suits perfectly. Addition also refers to adding to a space, which encompasses the Furniture, lighting and object design that we do, while Studio refers to our core grounding as a studio practice that works not only on our own design but also for other clients and projects.

2. YOU STUDIED INDUSTRIAL DESIGN AND HAVE SINCE FORGED A PATH MERGING OBJECTS/ FURNITURE AND PRODUCTS? ITS REFRESHING TO SEE SUCH A HOLISTIC RESPONSE TO WHATEVER DRIVES YOU DESIGN WISE... CAN YOU ELABORATE ABOUT THIS PATH?

I come from a Fine Arts background, which offers a fairly unique frame of reference for object design. I often  think sculpturally with an eye on function, rather than the other way around.

3. WITH BOTH PAGE THIRTY THREE AND ADDITION STUDIOS, YOU HAVE MADE THE PRODUCTS IN AUSTRALIA? IS THIS A CONSCIOUS CHOICE FROM AN ETHICAL POINT OF VIEW OR MORE ABOUT KEEPING MINIMUMS & TURNAROUND QUICK AND EASY?

We try to create as much as we can in Australia, not only to reduce mileage that each product travels, and therefore reduces its carbon footprint, but also in order to support the Australian manufacturing industry. I musty admit though, that this becomes harder and harder every year, and as time passes we are forced to create more and more parts overseas. This is quite sad and frustrating, but when you have your products appropriated by large corporations for a tenth of the price, it makes it difficult to compete.

4. WHAT IS YOUR VIEW ON THE INCREASE OF MINDFULNESS AND PRODUCTS AROUND RITUAL WELLNESS?

I think it is fantastic. The more mainstream that mindfulness mentality becomes then the more enlightened our society will become. I think this is a great thing.

5. WHAT ARE YOUR OWN PERSONAL RITUALS THAT HELP KEEP YOU FOCUSED AND SANE IN THE SMALL BUSINESS WORLD THAT CAN BE OVERWHELMING!?

I do Vedic Meditation (sometimes called Transcendental Meditation) twice daily, and have done for 7 years now. It is the best way to burn off mind confusion and anxiety. It helps me think clearly and concisely. Apart from that the main thing I do is wake at sunrise and go to work early. I like to have a few hours of quiet and calm in the morning to get through work. The upside of this is that I can then leave early, which I love. That way I can live out the afternoon removed from work commitments.

6. YOU HAVE RECENTLY SHOWN THE RANGE IN EUROPE. WHAT WAS THEIR REACTION? IS YOUR HOPE TO MAKE ADDITION STUDIOS A GLOBAL BRAND?

Since our inception in 2010 we have always had a better response internationally than in Australia, especially when it comes to media interest, so it has been cool to actually go and be face to face with our customer. America and England have been great for us, however this year going to Northern Europe was really interesting as the Wellness industry is just a starting to emerge there, so it was very fresh for that market.

7. SUCH A BIG PART OF THE APPEAL OF ADDITION STUDIOS IS THE PACKAGING AND BRANDING. HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT TO YOU AND YOUR DESIGN PROCESS?

Packaging is everything. Most of my day is devoted to pulling all the components together in a precise and cohesive manner.  I am OCD, so I love it. It really scratches an itch.

8. WE LOVE THE NEW AUSTRALIAN NATIVES RANGE. THEIR IS A REAL SENSE OF EMBRACING AUSTRALIAN NATURAL ESSENCES AND TAPPING INTO THAT WHICH MAKES US AS A COUNTRY UNIQUE. WHAT INSPIRED THIS PART OF YOUR NEW RANGE?

We have such unique colours and ingredients in Australia, so I think its great to explore these flavours. Its easy to forget that we are really exotic to people in other countries. The things we see everyday become so normal to us. It has been fun to play with everyday Australian flavours but also explore and mix really unique and unknown elements. It has also been a fantastic learning experience reading about all the different uses that indigenous cultures had for so many of the plants.

9. YOUR INSTAGRAM IS SO BEAUTIFULLY CURATED... ITS A REAL INSIGHT INTO YOUR DESIGNER MIND AND WHAT INSPIRES AND CALMS YOU. DO YOU FIND THAT THIS FORM OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN YOURSELF AND CUSTOMERS / RETAILERS LIKE US HELPS CREATE A RELATIONSHIP AND HOW IMPORTANT HAS INSTAGRAM BEEN AS A TOOL TO GROW YOUR BRAND?

I think it is really important because it’s a direct link to the people who are interested in your story. Apart from that its really fun. I love storyboarding brand images, inspiration and lifestyle into a single story, I find it really helps to resolve your own equations on what your brand means.

10. WHAT'S IN THE PIPELINE FOR ADDITION STUDIOS IN THE SHORT TERM?

Next up we begin work on our new concept store we purchased recently. Once thats open we will start to work on our new furniture collection which we aim to launch in New York next year.
